by Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has reviewed a proposal concerning the continuation of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for another five years, covering the financial period from 2026-27 to 2030-31.
The minister held a meeting with senior officials of the Ministry of Education to examine the proposal and discuss important aspects related to the future implementation of the scholarship programme. The review is significant because the scheme is aimed at helping talented students from economically weaker families continue their education at the secondary level.
What is the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme?
The NMMSS is a Central Sector scholarship programme designed to provide financial support to meritorious students who may otherwise be at risk of leaving school because of financial difficulties.
The scheme was introduced to encourage students to continue their studies after Class 8 and complete their secondary and higher secondary education. Under the existing arrangement, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to eligible students entering Class 9. The scholarship can subsequently be renewed for Classes 10, 11 and 12, provided the student meets the required conditions.
At present, selected beneficiaries receive ₹12,000 per year, equivalent to ₹1,000 per month. The financial assistance is intended to reduce the economic pressure on families and encourage students to remain in school.
Who can benefit from NMMSS?
The scholarship is primarily available to eligible students studying in State Government, government-aided and local body schools. Students enrolled in private schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are not covered under the existing scheme.
Students are selected through the prescribed process conducted by the respective States and Union Territories. The scholarship is administered through the National Scholarship Portal, while the financial assistance is transferred directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer system.
NMMSS Eligibility
- The student must be studying in a Class 8 in a government, government-aided or local body school.
- The scholarship is mainly intended for meritorious students from economically weaker families.
- Students must qualify through the selection test conducted by their respective State or Union Territory.
- The annual parental income must remain within the prescribed limit under the scheme.
- Students must meet the required academic performance criteria for selection and renewal.
- The scholarship is generally continued from Class 9 to Class 12, subject to fulfilment of renewal conditions.
- Students studying in private schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are not covered under the existing scheme.

It would also allow the government to continue using the scholarship as a tool to tackle school dropouts among academically capable students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.
However, the latest development concerns a proposal under review. A final decision on its continuation has not yet been announced.
